Do you want to dive into human behaviour and mental processes? Would you like to help individuals to better manage their emotions, their social interactions and their relationship with themselves and the world around them? With a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, you'll gain a deeper understanding of human behaviour. This general bachelor's degree enables you to acquire the notions and concepts of psychology, as well as in the sectors concerned by this human science: social work, paramedicine and education.

Not only are you interested in psychology, but you'd also like to go into health studies? The Psychology degree is one of the pathways for health bachelor’s degree offered by the University of Caen Normandy, which allow you to apply for health studies. The bachelor's degree in Psychology includes a basic health module to prepare you for these highly selective studies. During this 3-year bachelor's degree, you have 2 attempts to gain access to health studies.

The Bachelor’s degree in Psychology is a generalist degree offering an introduction to both research and professionalisation in the field of psychology:

  • An introduction to research, with the study and research project (TER)
  • An optional internship in Year 2 or Year 3 with a professional psychologist or someone working in the field of health, social work or education.

Entry requirements

To enter this bachelor’s, you should have obtained a high school diploma (equivalent of the French baccalaureate) with any major. There is no standart profile for studying psychology, however students with general education are more likely to succeed!

Course structure

Courses

  • Take place at Campus 1 in Caen
  • Amount to 500 hours per year, around 20 hours per week, plus a significant personal investment. For every 1 hour of teaching, you should have to do at least 1 hour of personal work.
  • Are completed by internships and, in Year 3, the possibility to attend the programme in continuing education

In 2nd year, the curriculum delves deeper into psychological concepts:

  • Attention, executive functions and working memory
  • Emotions, psychophysiology, psychopharmacology
  • Norms and judgements

In 3rd year, you will be able to choose between various specialisations:

  • Clinical and Pathological Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Social, Work, and Organizational Psychology
  • Cognitive and Educational Psychology
  • Neuropsychology
  • Psychobiology

Besides, throughout the programme, you will attend cross-curricular subjects:

Internships and placements

Do you want to learn more about careers related to psychology studies? In Year 2 or Year 3, the Bachelor's degree offers an optional internship lasting between 1 and 4 weeks. Depending on your career goals, you can complete your internship in a psychology-related field or explore other areas of health, social work, or education. At the end of the internship, you must submit a mini-report, and you will receive an internship certificate.

Coursework and assessment

The programme lasts 3 years. For each subject, called a course unit, examinations are held either at the end of each semester (finals) or throughout the year (coursework). Courses units are divided into two blocks:

  • A fundamental block comprising eight disciplinary course units
  • A cross-curricular block comprising two cross-curricular course units

Teaching units in the same block compensate each other. To pass a course unit, you must have an average mark of at least 10 points out of 20. If you have not completed your course unit, you can retake the courses units you failed; you do not have to retake the courses in which you have obtained at least 10 points out of 20. 

To pass a year, you must have an average of 10/20 or higher in each block.

The programme is taught in French.

Careers

A bachelor's degree in Psychology is the first step toward specialising in the field of psychology, as well as the first degree required to obtain the title of psychologist (Decree 2055-97 of February 3, 2005). You can also look for careers in health, social care, and education!

According to our last surveys, 8 out of 10 students continued their studies after earning a bachelor's degree. Your career path will therefore depend on your specialisation and the degree you choose after the bachelor's degree.
