Course overview

The master’s degree in Mathematics is part of the Minmacs Grad’School, a joint graduate school organised by 5 Norman higher education institutions (the universities of Caen Normandie, le Havre Normandie and Rouen Normandie, as well as the engineering schools INSA Rouen and ENSICaen). Minmacs offers high-level training courses based on:

  • The relation between mathematics and information sciences with two majors (Mathematical Informatics and Data Science) and several fields of application in digital sciences
  • Training through research, with the support of 6 Norman research units in mathematics and information sciences
  • Selective admissions to gather the best students, in Normandy and worldwide

You wish to pursue research in mathematics and benefit from partnerships with Norman laboratories and institutions? Join the Minmacs Grad’School within the master’s degree in Mathematics!

The master’s degree in Mathematics is a 2-year full-time programme offering in-depth knowledge and skills in mathematics to prepare the Agrégation of Mathematics, and more generally to pursue research in mathematics.

Application process

Admission and registration requirements may vary depending on your nationality, country of residence, foreign secondary school leaving certificate, and the nature of your programme of study. Discover how to apply to the University of Caen Normandy.

Course structure

Courses

  • Mostly take place on site (except for some remote courses)
    • Mostly on Campus 2 (Caen), within the Faculty of Sciences of the Université de Caen Normandie, but can also be given in other institutions that are part of the Grad’School, such as:
    • Madrillet Campus (Rouen)
    • Lebon Campus (Havre)
  • Amounts to 670 hours in Year 1 and 340 hours in Year 2.
  • Are completed by a compulsory internship.

Course units

Depending on the major you will choose, whether Data Science or Mathematical Informatics, you will be able to choose your courses units:

In the first semester:

  • 1 Humanities course (English, communication)
  • 5 courses within your major
  • 2 courses within your minor

In the second semester:

  • 1 Humanities course
  • 1 Research embedding course (initiation to research, project in a laboratory, conferences, summer school…)
  • 5 courses within your major
  • 1 course within your minor

In the third semester:

  • 1 Research embedding course
  • 5 courses within your major
  • 1 course within your minor

In the fourth semester, you will have to:

  • Attend 1 Research embedding course
  • Do an internship

As a student of the Grad’School following the master’s degree of Mathematics, your will attend Mathematics courses as your major, and Data Science courses as your minor.

In Caen, in Year 1, the Mathematical Informatics major offers the following courses:

  • Algebra
  • Algorithm
  • Function space
  • Functional analysis
  • Complex analysis
  • Field extension
  • Differential geometry
  • Group theory
  • Probabilities
  • Computer algebra system (Sagemath software)

In Year 2, you will go deeper into these concepts to prepare the Agrégation of Mathematics. Once you have chosen a specialisation, you can also pursue doctoral studies in all fields of mathematics.

Besides, during the first 3 semesters of the master’s degree, you will attend other courses within the Grad’School programme, in Data Science mostly, as well as transversal courses:

  • English
  • Communication
  • Conferences
  • Introduction to scientific research methods (2nd semester)

In the 4th semester, a supervised project will complete your training.

Internships and placements

The master’s in Mathematics within the Minmacs Grad’School offers 2 professional opportunities:

  • Year 1, 2nd semester: study and research project
  • Year 2, 2nd semester: internship or supervised project

Coursework and assessment

The course lasts 2 years and is divided in 4 semesters, each comprising several courses units. Examinations are held at the end of each semester and are graded on a scale from 0 to 20, 20 being the best grade. Grade compensation is organized without eliminatory marks and on the basis of the general average obtained in every course unit:

  • Over each semester
  • Over the 2 semesters of a same year

The 2 semesters do not compensate each other in year 2.

To successfully complete a semester, you must have an average mark of at least 10 points out of 20. If you have not completed your semester, you can retake the courses units you failed; you do not have to retake the courses in which you have obtained at least 10 points out of 20.

Language

  • French
  • English for some conferences

Study abroad

You wish to study or do an internship abroad during your master's? You can benefit from the Erasmus exchange programme of the University of Caen Normandy!

Learning outcome

By the end of this course, you will be able to

  • Master high-level, research-oriented mathematics and being able to teach mathematics in highschool or in a preparatory class

  • Master computer sciences tools (writing, digital and symbolic calculus systems)
  • Learn and synthesise knowledge on a complex topic
  • Write a scientific article
  • Present scientific results
  • Carry bibliographical and information research through various resources
  • Have a logical and rigorous mind
  • Speak English fluently

Further study

Once you’ve obtained your master’s degree, you can specialise in a branch of Mathematics, and pursue doctoral studies.
