Course units

YEAR 1

Semester 1

During the first Semester, most courses are common to the three study paths. They are based on : lectures in historiography and epistemology ; a research workshop focused on a chosen historical period ; an in-depth initiation to the sources and tools of research for the same historical period ; a research seminar focused on a specific theme and/or historical period ; an English language course or an advanced course in another foreign language.

In the History and Heritage study field, there is a specific teaching unit (UE) based on the social uses of history and a specific teaching unit (UE) for the preparation of the professional project.

Semester 2

During the second semester, students attend a research seminar ; courses on cultural history and policies and on intellectual property and digital law. They produce a dissertation project with a patrimonial aim. The preparation of the professional project is carried out in the form of a 15-30 day internship.

YEAR 2

Semester 3

During the third semester, the training includes a common core and courses focusing on 2 specialties : Archive-related professions, Museums and public history. The courses include cross-disciplinary subjects : accounting, law and public finance, technical English, knowledge of regional cultural and heritage institutions , public policy, project development, preparation for job interviews and writing of summary notes as well as an introduction to the collection and use of testimonies.

Students who choose to sepcialise in "Archive Professions" are trained in archiving, processing and collecting archives, attend initiation courses to XML (Extensible Markup Language) and EAD (Encoded Archival Description), as well as digitization of sources.

Students who choose to specialise in "Museums and public history" are taught mediation, museums and their related missions. During the third semester, all of them complete an internship in a cultural institution one day a week.

Semester 4

During the fourth semester, students complete a long-term internship of at least 4 months.

Course overview

The Master in History programme involves three study paths: History, History and Heritage, Archeology.

The History and Heritage study field aims to consolidate knowledge and develops critical thinking through the acquisition of those in-depth skills which are especially useful for research in the historical discipline.

In addition, it allows students to acquire skills that are specific to the professions of heritage and archives.

Access to Year 1 of the master's degree is selective, the admission criteria and enrollment capacity are defined by the university.

Recommended undergraduate background : History.

Year 1 :

  • Selective access - Enrollment capacity for this field of study: 22 places.
  • Submission of the application on the eCandidat platform  from April 25 to May 27, 2022. (2nd recruitment: subject to vacancies. Consult the eCandidat platform)

The course's educational committee assesses the candidate's previous results, the suitability of their curriculum with the desired training. It also assesses the candidate's motivation and the suitability of the desired training for their project.

Tuition fees

Administrative registration includes the payment of the Student and Campus Life Contribution and the payment of registration fees. Details can be found on the training portal.

Internships and placements

  • Year 1, semester 2 : 15 to 30 days orientation training
  • Year 2, semester 3 : internship one day per week
  • Year 2, semester 4 : long-term internship of at least 4 months

Assessment in the corresponding teaching units.

Coursework and assessment

The curriculum is organised in semesters. Each semester includes several teaching units. The exam sessions are organised at the end of each semester.

The assessment includes both continuous assessment and final assessment at the end of the semester. Presentation in viva of the dissertation project at the end of semester 2 and of the internship dissertation at the end of semester 4. The short-term internship of semester 2 and the internship of semester 3 are presented in the form of an internship report.

On the one hand, the performance compensation is organized over each semester without eliminatory marks and on the basis of the general average of the marks obtained for the various teaching units, weighted with coefficients.

On the other hand, the performance compensation is also organized between the two semesters.

To validate their semester, students must have an overall average mark of at least 10/20. If a student has not validated his semester, the teaching units for which he/she obtained at least 10/20 are condidered completed.

The validation of Year 1 requires a minimum score of 10/20 for the dissertation project.

The validation of Year 2 requires  a minimum score of 10/20 for the internship dissertation of semester 4.

Course arrangements for eligible students

Punctual possibility of exemption to attend courses and to take the continuous assessment. Exemptions granted on a case-by-case basis by the director of studies in agreement with the academic team.

It should be noted that the professionalizing aspect makes it difficult to organise some exam accommodations and that students in initial training must be available for internships.

Language

The language of instruction is French, except for foreign language courses

Study abroad

Possibility of an international mobility period within the framework of the long-term internship carried out in semester 4.

Learning outcome

The Master's program provides students with the following skills :

  • Mastery of the historical discipline : analysis and interpretation of sources, discourse analysis, critical thinking and synthesis skills

  • Skills in inventorying, conserving, classifying and processing heritage funds
  • Ability to organize a cultural mediation project
  • Knowledge in intellectual property law, administrative environment, accounting, public finance

  • Skills and know-how needed to work  in a company or cultural institution, control of individual and collective working time
