Course overview
The master’s degree in Mathematics is part of the Minmacs Grad’School, a joint graduate school organised by 5 Norman higher education institutions (the universities of Caen Normandie, le Havre Normandie and Rouen Normandie, as well as the engineering schools INSA Rouen and ENSICaen). Minmacs offers high-level training courses based on:
- The relations between mathematics and information sciences with two majors (Mathematical Informatics and Data Science) and several fields of application in digital sciences
- Training through research, with the support of 6 Norman research units in mathematics and information sciences
- Selective admissions to gather the best students, in Normandy and worldwide
You wish to pursue research in mathematics and benefit from partnerships with Norman laboratories and institutions? Join the Minmacs Grad’School within the master’s degree in Mathematics!
The master’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics is a 2-year full-time programme training specialists in mathematical informatics or Data Science. You will both improve your knowledge in subjects such as mathematics and information sciences, and acquire transferrable skills, both necessary to work in digital science engineering, or scientific research in information science research.

- Graduate from a bachelor's degree in Mathematics or in Mathematics and Computer Science Applied to Human and Social Sciences
- Have skills in informatics, applied mathematics, mathematical informatics, data science
Language proficiency requirements
Minimum French level required: C1
Minimum English level required: B2
Specific conditions
If you completed Year 1 of this master's, you will automatically enter Year 2.
If you completed Year 1 of another master's, you can apply to Year 2 of this master's.
Course structure
Courses
- Take place mostly on Campus 2 (Caen), within the Faculty of Sciences of the Université de Caen Normandie, but can also be given in other institutions that are part of the Grad’School, such as the Madrillet Campus (Rouen) or the Lebon Campus (Havre)
- Amount to 516 hours each year, around 21 hours a week, except for the 2nd semester of Year 2 (S4), dedicated to a senior-year internship.
- Are completed by a compulsory internship
Course units
Depending on the major you will choose, whether Data Science or Mathematical Informatics, you will be able to choose your courses units:
In the first semester:
- 1 Humanities course (English, communication)
- 5 courses within your major
- 2 courses within your minor
In the second semester:
- 1 Humanities course
- 1 Research embedding course (initiation to research, project in a laboratory, conferences, summer school…)
- 5 courses within your major
- 1 course within your minor
In the third semester:
- 1 Research embedding course
- 5 courses within your major
- 1 course within your minor
In the fourth semester, you will have to:
- Attend 1 Research embedding course
- Do an internship
As a student of the Grad’School following the master’s degree of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, you will attend Data Sciences courses as your major, and Mathematics courses as your minor.
In Caen, the Mathematical Informatics major offers the following courses:
- Exploratory data analysis
- Machine learning
- Artificial intelligence
- Imaging science & computer vision
- Mathematical modelling
- Partial differential equation
- Optimisation
- Digital analysis and scientific calculus
Besides, during the first 3 semesters of the master’s degree, you will attend other courses within the Grad’School programme, in Mathematical Informatics mostly, as well as transversal courses:
- English
- Communication
- Conferences
- Introduction to scientific research methods (2nd semester)
In the 4th semester, a supervised project will complete your training.
Internships and placements
The master’s in Applied Mathematics and Statistics within the Minmacs Grad’School offers a four-month-long internship in the second semester of Year 2. The internship will preferably take place in laboratories or research units – although placements in research and development services and data exploitation companies are accepted.
The internship accounts for one course unit and will be evaluated as such, through a detailed report on your professional activities and a defending of said report.
Coursework and assessment
The course lasts 2 years and is divided in 4 semesters, each comprising several courses units. The first three semesters are graded through coursework, on a scale from 0 to 20, 20 being the best grade. Grade compensation is organized without eliminatory marks and on the basis of the general average obtained in every course unit:
- Over each semester
- Over the 2 semesters of the same year
To successfully complete a semester, you must have an average mark of at least 10 points out of 20. If you have not completed your semester, you can retake the courses units you failed; you do not have to retake the courses in which you have obtained at least 10 points out of 20.
