Course overview
Mathematics are everywhere: be it for the industry or daily life tools, mathematics contribute to solve contemporary issues in every field of work. You wish to pursue research in mathematics or work in education? The master’s degree in Mathematics offers you the General Mathematics path to master all fields of mathematics.
The master’s degree in Mathematics is a 2-year full-time programme offering in-depth knowledge and skills in mathematics to prepare the Agrégation of Mathematics, and more generally to pursue research in mathematics.
Highlights
The General mathematics path of the master’s degree in Mathematics is recommended to prepare the Agrégation of Mathematics. Indeed, the master’s programme
- Focuses on the option C of the examination: Formal calculus
- Can be attended as a non-degree training course: if you are preparing the Agrégation and already meet the master’s requirements, you can attend the courses units of Year 2 to complete your preparation
Besides, the master is supported by the Nicolas Oresme Laboratory of Mathematics (LMNO · CNRS UMR 6139) (website in French) in Caen, which offers research internships in Year 1.
Application requirements
Entry requirements
To enter this course, you should
- Master knowledge and skills of a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics
- Know basic theoretical and technical concepts in algebra, arithmetic, including linear and bilinear algebra, and on algebraic structures (such as group and ring)
- Know basic theoretical and technical concepts in analysis and probabilities, particularly integral, differential calculus, normed vector spaces and Hilbert spaces
- Possess basic skills in programming and basic knowledge in algorithms
Language proficiency requirements
Minimum French level required: C1
Minimum English level required: B2
Specific conditions
If you completed Year 1 of this master's, you will automatically enter Year 2.
If you completed Year 1 of another master's, you can apply to Year 2 of this master's.
Course structure
Courses
- Take place on site on Campus 2 (Caen), within the Faculty of Sciences of the Université de Caen Normandie
- Amount to 490 hours in Year 1 (around 30 hours a week) and 380 hours in Year 2 (around 20 hours a week).
- Are completed by two compulsory internships.
Course units
In Year 1, The master’s degree in Mathematics encompasses a wide range of mathematical fields, notably:
- Algebra
- Algorithm
- Complex analysis
- Functional analysis
- Function space
- Field extension
- Differential geometry
- Group theory
- Probabilities
In Year 2, you will go deeper into the following concepts to prepare the Agrégation of Mathematics:
- Algebra
- Analysis
- Formal calculus
- Written composition
- Modelling
Besides, during the two-year of training, you will attend transversal courses useful in whatever career you choose:
- English
- Computer algebra system (Sagemath software)
Each year, a compulsory internship will complete your training.
Internships and placements
The master’s in Mathematics within the Minmacs Grad’School offers 2 professional opportunities, depending on whether you wish to pursue careers in teaching or research:
- Year 1: study and research project (8 weeks) or internship in a school (2 weeks) and conference for students (preparation of an Agrégation lesson)
- Year 2: supervised internship in a school (2 weeks), with a detailed report on teaching
Coursework and assessment
The course lasts 2 years and is divided in 4 semesters, each comprising several courses units. Examinations are held at the end of each semester and are graded on a scale from 0 to 20, 20 being the best grade. Grade compensation is organized without eliminatory marks and on the basis of the general average obtained in every course unit:
- Over each semester
- Over the 2 semesters of year 1
To successfully complete a semester, you must have an average mark of at least 10 points out of 20. If you have not completed your semester, you can retake the courses units you failed; you do not have to retake the courses in which you have obtained at least 10 points out of 20.
