Course overview

The choice of materials is crucial in every production, especially for the environment, transportation, energy storage… You want to specialise in materials? The master’s degree in Materials Sciences prepares you to drive research and development project in these fields.

This master’s degree is part of the graduate school for Materials & Energy Sciences (GS-MES), an innovative and ambitious training programme in the fields of materials and energy. As such, the master’s degree in Materials Sciences is associated with

  • Norman laboratories focusing on these fields
  • The University of Rouen Normandy: during Year 1, you choose follow the same courses in the universities of Rouen Normandy and Caen Normandy; for Year 2, you will choose between 2 specialisation paths:
  • Advanced Materials for Energy on Multiple Scales in Caen
  • Materials Sciences and Characterisation for Sustainable Development in Rouen

Highlights

The master’s degree in Materials Sciences is a joint diploma organised by the University of Rouen Normandie and the University of Caen Normandy. The teaching teams of both universities work together to ensure a coherent program:

  • A director of studies
  • A board dedicated to the improvement of the programme, comprising of:
    • Deputy heads of the programme
    • Directors of studies for each year
    • Head of international relations in Rouen
    • 2 representants for the teachers and researchers
    • 2 representants for Year 1 students and 2 representants for Year 2 students (one per path and/or site)
    • 6 professionals in materials and energy

Application requirements

Entry requirements

For first-year admission, the selection will be based on:

  • Skills and knowledge of a bachelor’s degree in Physics
  • Scholastic records (quality of previous studies, motivation and CV)

Language proficiency requirements

Minimum French proficiency level: C1

Minimum English proficiency level: B2

Specific conditions

For second-year admission

  • If you have completed the first year of the master, you will access directly to the second year.

Course structure

Courses

  • Take place on site in
    • The campus 2 (Caen) of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Caen Normandy.
    • The campus Sciences and techniques of the University of Rouen Normandy.
  • Amount to 290 hours a semester, around 25 hours a week, except for the fourth semester (S4) dedicated to your senior year internship.
  • Are completed by a professional training including compulsory internships.

In Year 1, the master’s courses are the same whether you attend them in the university of Caen or Rouen.

In Year 2,

  • The Advanced Materials for Energy on Multiple Scales path takes place in Caen, with some courses in the ENSICAEN, an engineering school also located on the campus 2.
  • The Materials Sciences and Characterisation for sustainable development path takes places in Rouen

The program also uses the eCampus online platform to

  • Share written resources for the courses, all in English
  • Livestream courses that take place in one of the two universities, so that the students located in the other university can attend them

Course units

The master’s degree in Materials Sciences offers a progressive specialisation. In Year 1, you will acquire basic knowledge and skills in materials and various scientific fields:

  • Thermodynamics
  • Crystallised materials
  • Condensed matter physics
  • Mechanical behaviour of materials
  • Functional electronical structures and properties
  • Multiscale materials characterisation
  • Humanities and English

In Year 2, you will specialise your program, either in Materials Sciences and Characterisation for Sustainable Development in Rouen or Advanced Materials for Energy on Multiple Scales in Caen. The programme offered by the University of Caen Normandy contains the following courses:

  • Materials for energy, from synthesis to devices
  • Phase balancing and structural resolution
  • Miniaturisation and scaling effects
  • Materials damage and durability
  • International communication

Internships and placements

The Materials Sciences master’s degree includes two internships:

  • Year 1: scientific projects and internship in a research laboratoray or an industrial company (2 to 3 months)
  • Year 2: senior year internship in a research laboratory or an industrial company (4 to 6 months)

Each internship comes under a learning agreement and will be evaluated with an internship report and an interview with the jury.

These internships are great opportunities to:

  • Put your knowledge and skills into practice
  • Acquire scientific methodolgy
  • Improve your teamwork skills

Coursework and assessment

The course lasts 2 years and is divided in 6 semesters, each comprising several courses units. Examinations are held at the end of each semester and are graded on a scale from 0 to 20, 20 being the best grade. Grade compensation is organised without eliminatory marks and on the basis of the general average obtained in every course unit:

  • Over each semester
  • Over the 2 semesters of year 1.

The 2 semesters do not compensate each other in year 2.

To successfully complete a semester, you must have an average mark of at least 10 points out of 20. If you have not completed your semester, you can retake the courses units you failed; you do not have to retake the courses in which you have obtained at least 10 pts out of 20.

Language

  • French
  • English

Learning outcome

By the end of this course, you will acquire in-depth knowledge in

  • Physical metallurgy
  • Solid physics
  • Mechanical and functional properties
  • Materials analyse and characterisation techniques
  • Solid chemistry
  • Synthesis techniques
  • Materials for energy

Hence, you will be able to:

  • Measure and interpret the macroscopic physical properties (electronical and mechanical) of materials and take into account the corresponding thermodynamical phenomena
  • Identify, select and analyse with a critical mind various resources on a given subject, and synthetise these data to exploit them
  • Master notions linked to intellectual property, quality, environmental and responsibility
  • Communicate, through speech or written form, in French and at least in another language, preferably English

Further study

Once you’ve obtained your master’s degree in Materials Sciences, you can start pursue doctoral studies, especially in the Physics, Engineering Sciences, Materials and Energy doctoral school of the University of Caen Normandy.

Careers

With an expertise in Materials Sciences, you can work as

  • Engineer
  • Research and development (R&D) manager
  • Project leader

The programme prepares you for careers in industries and laboratories dealing with materials, especially energy and sustainable development issues:

  • Research study groups
  • Analysis or service provider laboratories
  • Quality control services
  • Scientific devices making companies
