You’re interested in social sciences studying societal issues, but do not want to specialise yourself directly after high school? You have a solid general culture and like to be involved in your studies? Join the Multidisciplinary bachelor’s degree specialised in Sciences and Society!

The Sciences and Society programme of the University of Caen Normandy offers a multidisciplinary bachelor’s programme. The three-year full-time programme provides a comprehensive curriculum in various branches of general knowledge (science, economics, social sciences), to understand the main scientific challenges of our societies. This programme grants you the same degree as a bachelor’s, allowing you to pursue multidisciplinary master’s programmes.

Highlights

You can’t choose between natural and social sciences? With the Multidisciplinary bachelor’s degree in Sciences and Society, you don’t have to: the bachelor’s prepares both to empirical sciences and to economic, legal, politic or social sciences. To do so, the curriculum is based on the existing courses both of the university and of the François de Malherbe high school in Caen. As such, you can discover studying in a university while improving disciplines you started in high school.

Course structure

Courses

  • Take place on site
    • Campus 1 of the University of Caen Normandy
    • François de Malherbe high school (Caen)
  • Over the 3 years of the multidisciplinary bachelor’s, you will spend more and more time at the university:
    • Year 1: 65% in high school · 35% in the university
    • Year 2: 50% in high school · 50% in the university
    • Year 3: 25% in high school · 75% in the university
  • Amount to 600 hours per year, approximately 24 hours per week
  • Are completed by internships

Course units

The multidisciplinary bachelor’s programme in Science and Society offers courses in diverse disciplines. On the one hand, the curriculum relies on scientific, economic and social courses:

  • Economics
  • Sociology
  • Scientific culture

On the other hand, you will attend courses specialised in science and society:

  • Science history and contemporary world issues
  • Introduction to politic sciences
  • Introduction to law
  • Main scientific challenges

Besides, you will also acquire transferable skills and general knowledge with courses such as:

  • Mathematics
  • Computer Science
  • French Literature and Philosophy
  • Foreign Languages (English and another language)

Internships and placements

The bachelor’s programme includes several internships:

  • Optional internships in Year 1 and Year 2
  • Compulsory internship from 6 to 8 weeks during the second semester of Year 3

Coursework and assessment

The course lasts 3 years and is divided in 6 semesters, each comprising several courses units. Examinations are held through coursework (written exams, essays, reports, oral presentations, dissertation…) graded on a scale from 0 to 20, 20 being the best grade. Grade compensation is organized without eliminatory marks and on the basis of the general average obtained in every course unit:

  • Over each semester
  • Over the 2 semesters of the same year

To successfully complete a semester, you must have an average mark of at least 10 points out of 20. If you have not completed your semester, you can retake the courses units you failed; you do not have to retake the courses in which you have obtained at least 10 points out of 20.

Study abroad

You wish to go abroad (website in French) during your bachelor’s programme? Thanks to the exchange programmes of the University of Caen Normandy, you can study abroad for a semester in Year 3.

Further study

Once you’ve obtained your multidisciplinary bachelor’s degree, you can pursue masters in economic and social sciences, and focusing on the transfer of scientific knowledge. The University of Caen Normandy notably offers the following master’s programmes:

  • Scientific and Technical Information and Mediation
  • Sociology, with specialisations in Risk and Environment Governance or in Social Vulnerabilities
  • Teaching programmes, notably in Economic and Social Sciences
