You’re interested in digital and new technologies? You also like German and wish to learn more about German culture? The Foreign and Regional Languages, Literature and Civilisations offers the joint degree in Franco-German Studies: Language, Culture and Digital!
Relying on a strong history of university exchanges between the University of Caen and the University of Würzburg, the joint bachelor’s degree aims at training you both in:
- Foreign Language (German)
- Information and communications technologies and studies
By the end of this three-year full-time programme, you will obtain a joint diploma:
- The French bachelor’s degree in Foreign and Regional Languages, Literature and Civilizations specialised in German
- The German bachelor’s degree in specialised in Franco-German Studies: Language, Culture and Digital
As such, you will master both linguistic and digital tools useful for online content creation, sharing knowledge in museums or schools, and any field in which France and Germany work hand in hand!
Highlights
The Foreign and Regional Languages, Literature and Civilisations specialised in Franco-German Studies: Language, Culture and Digital is a joined diploma. The degree is managed jointly by the University of Caen Normandy and the University of Würzburg, and gives you the opportunity to meet with German students and teachers – online and in person, with a year abroad!
The bachelor’s degree is organised in three years:
- In Year 1, French and German students attend courses in their universities, and meet online
- In Year 2, German students spend the year in Caen
- In Year 3, French students spend the year in Würzburg
Between Year 2 and 3, you have to do a compulsory 6-week-long internship in a German-speaking country.

To enter this master’s, you should
- Be interested in reading, studying and discovering digital tools and various fields of German culture
- Be willing to take part in multicultural exchanges, including spending a year in Würzburg
- Have completed secondary education, and obtained a high school diploma equivalent to the French baccalaureate
Moreover, to spend Year 3 at the University of Würzburg, you need to take the DSH-2 language exam, implying a C1 level in Germany.
Specific conditions
Within the Faculty of Foreign Languages, the Applied Foreign Languages and the Foreign and Regional Languages, Literature and Civilisations bachelor’s degrees belong to the same department. As such, if you are registered in one of these programmes, you can change programme any time during the year to attend another bachelor’s of the same department.

Course units
German proficiency is essential to the bachelor’s degree in Foreign and Regional Languages, Literature and Civilisations specialised in German. From Year 1 to Year 3, you will deepen your mastering of this language, with main courses in:
- Linguistics: grammar and expression, phonetics, translation
- Literature: literary works from the 17th century to today, history of literary genres, methodology (commentary, dissertation, and Seminararbeit: production of a personal essay)
- Civilisation: economic, politic and social history of German-speaking countries from the 16th century to today, analysis methodology, cultural media study: press, cinema, movie…)
As well as transferrable courses dedicated to digital technologies:
- Digital theory and practice, taught within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences: text processors, document review, web documents, data structures, data exploring and interrogating, multimedia content creation, knowledge engineering, programming…
- English as a second language
Internships and placements
The bachelor’s programme includes one compulsory in a German-speaking country. The internship must be done between Year 2 and Year 3 and last at least 6 weeks. It will be evaluated through detailed written report and an oral presentation of this report.
Coursework and assessment
The course lasts 3 years and is divided in 6 semesters. Courses are gathered in skills, called course units. Each course is graded through

The assessment depends on the faculty teaching the course:
- The Faculty of Foreign Languages teaching the German courses gathers course units in skills units, with a disciplinary skills unit and a transferrable skills unit. Each course is graded through coursework only, from 0 to 20, 20 being the best grade: assessments can take place either in class, during the 12 weeks of training, or at the end of these weeks, during the 2 weeks dedicated to exams, or both. There are no final exams at the end of the semester or of the year, and you cannot retake an exam.
- The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences teaching the Digital Humanities courses will test you on both coursework and final exams at the end of the semester. Unlike the Faculty of Foreign Language, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences includes retakes in June.
During your studies in the University of Würzburg, you will abide by the rules of the courses, exams, and assessment methods of the university.

Year 3 of the bachelor’s degree takes place in Würzburg, according to the usual conditions of an Erasmus+ exchange programme.
