Course overview
You’re interested in the nuclear industry? You wish to learn more about nuclear or electronuclear surety and decommissioning? With the Engineering School of the University of Caen Normandy (ESIX) and its programme in Nuclear Engineering, you will acquire a solid scientific, technical, human, industrial and management culture!
This three-year full-time programme prepares you to become an engineer ready to intervene at every level of a nuclear facility. Construction, modification, exploitation, maintenance and decommissioning… The ESIX trains you to all these missions, from studying the nuclear industrial activity to studying surety related to nuclear facilities.
Highlights
By choosing the engineering programme in Mechatronics and Embedded Systems, you choose
- A practice-oriented programme, with many supervised projects involving industrial and local professional partners of the ESIX
- A privileged relationship with the professional environment (intervention of professionals, company visits, expert conferences…)
Welcoming international students
Since 2019, the University of Caen Normandy has been awarded the "Bienvenue en France" label by Campus France, highlighting the quality of the university's welcome for international students.

Coursework and assessment
The course lasts 2 years and is divided in 6 semesters, each comprising several courses units. In each course unit, you will be graded through
- Coursework
- Practical labs
- Detailed written report and oral presentation for the internship
To complete a semester, you must complete each course unit. If you do fail a unit, you can retake it, but the units do not compensate each other.
If you complete your 6 semesters, you will obtain your engineering’s degree.
Language
French
English for some courses
Study abroad
To obtain an engineering degree, you have to go abroad during your training, preferably in Year 3. The international mobility is compulsory, lasts 9 weeks in a work-study programme. As long as it is linked to the skills of an engineer in energy engineering, it can be done in various conditions:
- Semester or year abroad
- Gap year
- Dual degree
- Joint degree
- Internship in a company or a laboratory
Whatever your project is, the university of Caen Normandy offers many partnerships and exchange programmes to go abroad (website in French)!
Learning outcome
By the end of this course, you will be able to
- Manage national or international nuclear projects
- Carry out surety and radiation protection analysis, both in nuclear exploitation and in nuclear decommissioning
- Manage interventions in a radioactive environment
- Lead nuclear decommissioning, waste treatment and sanitation of a nuclear facility
- Master tools of 4.0 industry
Further study
Once you’ve obtained your engineering degree in Nuclear Engineering, you can pursue your studies with:
- A specialised Master’s programme or another engineering school
- A doctorate and pursue doctoral studies in an academic laboratory or for an industry
Careers
Once you’ve completed engineering school, you can work as a scientific engineer specialised in, for instance:
- Nuclear production and nuclear decommissioning
- Industry business
- Industry risk management
- Nuclear industry surety
- Project management
These specialities can apply in very diverse fields such as
- Nuclear energy production
- Nuclear fuel recycling
- Nuclear facility decommissioning
