Course units

Educational Structure

  • 1st Year Engineering Cycle - Common Core:
    • Electronics and Automation (Deterministic signals and systems, functional electronics, logic and CPU, probabilities, control systems, sensors, and actuators),
    • Mechanics and Computing (Algorithmics and C language, Mechanical system design, Solid mechanics, microcontrollers, heat transfer),
    • Engineering Mathematics and Humanities (English, second language, project management).
  • 2nd Year - Specialization: 2 Available Tracks
    • Mechatronics Track: Deformable mechanics, fluid mechanics, finite element methods, vibration.
    • Nomadic Systems Track: Object-oriented programming, artificial intelligence, communicating systems, distributed intelligence.
    • Common Core for Both Tracks: English, second language, reliability, state representation, high-frequency and antennas, real-time microcontrollers.
  • 3rd Year - Reinforcement
    • Mechatronics Track: Microsystems, multiphysics, energy, identification, noise, integrated circuits.
    • Nomadic Systems Track: Filtering, knowledge extraction, embedded Linux, human-machine interface, georeferenced systems, parallel architectures, security.

Projects - Internships

Each year of the program concludes with an internship of varying duration: a 1st-year executive internship, a 2nd-year specialization internship, and a 3rd-year final study internship.

Additionally, several projects accompany the program: a 1st-year tutored project, a 2nd-year supervised project, a 3rd-year engineering project.

Course overview

The Engineering Cycle of the Mechatronics and Embedded Systems Department at ESIX Normandie trains engineers specialized in Mechatronics and Embedded Systems over 3 years. The programme  focuses on the design and development of complex systems that integrate mechanics, electronics, control systems, microprocessors, and computer science.

In the first year, engineering students follow a common core curriculum to acquire fundamental knowledge and skills in mechanics, electronics, control systems, and computer science before specializing in one of the following tracks in the second year: mechatronic systems or nomadic and distributed systems. The final year allows engineering students to further enhance their skills and knowledge in their chosen specialization area, culminating in an end-of-study internship related to their professional aspirations.

Research Affiliation

Faculty members involved in the program are researchers from research laboratories associated with CNRS: GREYC, LMNO, M2C, LIS.

International Focus

  • International Mobility: During the engineering cycle, international partnerships established by ESIX and the University of Caen offer engineering students the opportunity for international mobility.
  • Foreign Languages: The Carré International of the University of Caen offers courses in more than 14 languages, spanning from beginner level A1 to advanced level C2.

Support and Accreditation

The program is supported and accredited by the TES (Digital) and NEXTMOVE (Automobile) competitiveness clusters and by the NAE (Aerospace, Space, Defense) and NMA (Electronics) industrial sectors.

This engineering degree is accredited by the Commission des Titres d'Ingénieurs (CTI) - Engineering Titles Commission.

Entry requirements

The MeSE engineering program is accessible:

Through competitive exams after preparatory classes:

  • MP, MPI, PC, PSI, PT: Polytech CPGE competition
  • TSI: Centrale-Supelec competition + interview organized by ESIX MeSE
  • ATS: ENSEA competition + interview organized by ESIX MeSE

Through application + interview:

  • After completing a validated scientific Bac+3 (or +2) (DUT, BUT2, BUT3, L2, L3, LP, or equivalent).

 

Tuition fees

Administrative registration includes the payment of the Student Life and Campus Contribution as well as the tuition fees. The details can be found on the training portal.

Course structure

Full-time in-person.

Internships and placements

Throughout the engineering program, three mandatory internships punctuate each year of study:

  • In the 1st year of the engineering program: an executive internship lasting 4 to 8 weeks
  • In the 2nd year of the engineering program: an assistant engineer internship lasting 8 to 17 weeks
  • In the 3rd year of the engineering program: an engineer internship lasting 22 to 26 weeks

It is highly recommended that one of the three internships occurs abroad.

Coursework and assessment

The engineering degree is obtained if:

  • All course units (unités d'enseignements - UEs) over the three years of the engineering program are validated under the following conditions:
    • An average grade of the course units is definitively obtained with a score equal to or higher than 10 out of 20.
    • Subjects within the same course unit are compensatable.
    • No compensation between different course units; all must be individually passed.
    • Semesters are not compensatable between each other.
  • A certification attesting to a B2 level in English (780 points in the TOEIC English exam) is obtained.

Assessments for each subject are conducted through continuous evaluations.

Study abroad

Obligatory international mobility of 17 weeks must be completed during the 3 years of the engineering program. This mobility can take various forms, which can be cumulative:

  • A semester of study abroad,
  • A gap year abroad,
  • Pursuing a double degree or joint degree with a foreign institution,
  • Internships in companies or laboratories abroad,
  • Employment,
  • etc.

International partnerships established by ESIX and the University of Caen support engineering students in pursuing their international mobility.

  • Nomadic and Distributed Systems Option: Industrial Computing (networks, smart grids, Bluetooth, M2M, specialized microprocessors…), Mobile Computing (constraint programming and optimization, mobile and georeferenced systems, distributed algorithmics, and security…)

Further study

Graduate engineering students have the opportunity to advance their studies through a doctoral thesis in a university laboratory or in industry.

Careers

Research and Development Engineer (R&D)

The mechatronics engineer works at their computer to design "intelligent" systems aimed at enhancing the performance of various equipment. Their role involves merging the advantages and constraints of three essential technologies: electronics for system control, industrial computing for software development, and mechanics for motion transmission. Due to the countless possible combinations among these technologies, there are no limits to their creativity, and the nature of their work varies significantly depending on the industry in which they operate.
